Peter Schlesinger: Eight Days in Yemen.

Damiani Editore

In 1976, Peter Schlesinger visited the Yemen Arab Republic – as the northern part of Yemen was then called. He was accompanying the photographer Eric Boman who was on a fashion shoot assignment for a French magazine. Yemen had been closed to foreigners for many years and in the interest of encouraging more tourism the government decided to court media outlets into coming to Yemen.

During the eight days he was there Schlesinger took hundreds of photographs documenting what he saw as he travelled from the capital Sanaa and on through the northern city of Sa’da where the Houthis are now fighting.

Acne Studios

The monograph, published by Acne Studios and printed in Sweden, uses materials painstakingly selected to reflect the exactitude of Schlesinger’s work. The copperplate paper, one of the three used inside, is imported from Japan, while the cover is bound in jute cloth made to order in Belgium. Inside, Schlesinger’s work is presented in chronological order from the 1980s up to the present day, photographed by the artist’s partner Eric Boman. It also features a selection of Schlesinger’s works on paper connected to each of the periods presented. The book comes in a limited edition of 1000 copies, each one manually numbered with a stamp.
